What are rhe benefits of cold water swimming?

Many people ask what the benefits of cold water swimming are. I’d been plunging into cold water for years, knowing that it made me feel fantastic and that I was quite addicted, before actually looking into the science. Here is what I have found:

A Natural high

Cold water swimming triggers endorphins; the feel good chemical produced by the brain. All forms of exercise, including swimming, generate endorphins which is why exercise is so important for keeping our mood buoyant, warding off those grumpy lows and fending off depression. Cold water swimming not only releases endorphins through exercise BUT it brings us closer to the pain barrier. When we’re in pain, endorphins are released to help us cope.

Boost your immune system

The effect of cold water on our immune system has been the focus of several studies in recent years. When you are immersed in cold water the body reacts by boosting your white blood cell count. This is the body’s way of defending itself against changing conditions. The good news is that, the more you swim, the better your body gets at reacting. You become acclimatised and your immune defence response is strengthened.

Circulation and blood flow

Cold water swimming forces blood to the internal organs to keep them safe. As warm blood returns to the surface it helps to heat your extremities and flushes your veins, arteries, and capillaries.

Increase in libido

Cold water swimming increases libido making you feel more confident, giving you higher self-esteem and making you feel happier! Each cold water swim boosts oestrogen and testosterone, these are hormones which work on enhancing our libido.

Burns calories

Your body has to work hard to keep you warm when you’re swimming in cold water. You burn fat at a more efficient rate while you’re swimming in the cold and when you’re warming up afterwards. This means that you use up more calories than you would swimming in warm water.

Relaxation and Calm

After swimming in cold water, which places stress on the body physically and takes mental strength, you will feel relaxed and calm. Many swimmers talk of a euphoric high and certainly feel proud of their efforts.

Community and Friends

There is a wonderful sense of community and camaraderie amongst cold water swimmers. They are an open and friendly bunch. It’s very much an activity which is not about performance but about participation.
